68-year old Catholic elementary school in Bridgeport’s East Side school forced to close

Blessed Sacrament/St. Mary School opened in 1923 to serve Brideport’s struggling East Side neighborhood. For 68 years, the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell, NJ ran the school. But, in 1991, it was forced to close due to financial difficulties and low enrollment. Many of the students and staff were transferred to St. Peter School in Bridgeport, CT which is currently struggling to stay open, but thanks to continued support of the Diocese of Bridgeport and supportive foundations, St. Peters and 5 other Bridgeport Schools are still open today.
