Students in the Archdiocese of New York respond with compassion to Haiti

CAP is proud to share Haiti Relief efforts of the Archdiocese of New York Catholic elementary schools.

Reports on coming in daily from schools – here is a snapshot of the creative and compassionate ways the New York Catholic elementary school community is responding to the people of Haiti.

St. John’s School – Bronx

St. John’s school has a special relationship with the congregation of The Religious of Jesus and Mary who have three convents in Haiti, one of which was destroyed. The principal sent a letter home to parents announcing that on 1/15/10 there would be a dress down day charging $2.00 a student for Haiti relief. We are proud to report that the school raised $1,900. It will be sent through the congregation of the Religious of Jesus & Mary in Washington who have set up Port- au-Prince Earthquake Relief (P.A.P.E.R).

St. Gabriel School – Bronx

Sr. Patricia Dillon, RJM is a missionary in Haiti and is the aunt of two 8th grade students Andrew & Kenneth Dillon.  St. Gabriel’s former principal. Sr. Claire Dandeneau, RJM,  is a member of The Religious of Jesus & Mary. This order has a school north of Port-au- Prince in Gros Morne.  On 1/15/10 St. Gabriel is having a dress down day charging $3.00 a student. Many parents have sent in more.  On 1/26/10 there will also be a bake sale. The Lenten mission money collected, as always will be also be sent to Port- au- Prince Earthquake Relief (P.A.P.E.R) through The Religious of Jesus and Mary.

St. Raymond Elementary – Bronx

Sr. Patricia Brito, RJM is a member of The Religious of Jesus and Mary, who have been directly affected by the earthquake in Haiti. Sr. Patricia has organized the “We Care” project that consisted of  a dress down day on Friday, January 15th and continued with the “We Care” Haiti Donation Pledge, which ran from Friday, January 15 through Wednesday, January 20. The principal also sent the students home with a sponsor sheet and asked that they ask their friends and family to donate $1.00 for Haiti. It was a school wide effort involving 652 students from pre-kindergarten to 8th grade. To date they have raised a grand in total of $15,250.00, which will go to the Port au Prince Earthquake Relief (P.A.P.E.R.).

St. Barnabas Elementary School – Bronx

On 1/22/10 the school will have a dress down day @ $1.00 per student. Which will be sent to
Port-au-Prince Earthquake Relief  (P.A.P.ER) through The Religious of Jesus and Mary.

St. Lucy School – Bronx

St. Lucy has organized two dress down days 1/27/10 & 2/11/10. On 1/31/10 there will be a parish bake sale after all masses.  The Valentines Day Dance on 2/11/10 sponsored by the student counsel will be dedicated to the Haitian Relief Fund. All monies collected will be sent to Catholic Charities.

Holy Family School, Bronx

The principal sent home a letter asking for donations for Haiti, and has raised $2,000 that will be sent to Catholic Relief Services.

St. Mary Star of the Sea – Bronx

On 1/22/10 they will be having a $5.00 dress down day per student and faculty and donations will be sent to the American Red Cross.

St. Helena School – Bronx

They collected $2,400 with the generous donations from a dress down day on 1/15/10, which will be sent to the Catholic Relief Services.

St. John Vianney Cure of Ars – Bronx

On January 21st there will be $2.00 dress down day and a bake sale has been organized.

Holy Cross School  – Bronx

The principal’s of Holy Cross and St. John Vianney are planning a basketball game against each other’s teams with the proceeds to benefit the earthquake victims of Haiti. The game will take place on Friday, February 5th during Catholic Schools Week.

Visitation School – Bronx

The school has raised $1,258 toward the Haitian Relief Mission.

St. Philip Neri – Bronx

The school has raised over $1,000 for The Haitian Relief Fund by doing out-of-uniform days.

Immaculate Conception School, Manhattan

Their music teacher Mr. Edsel-Samy Renaud, lost his mother and sister, and is presently in Haiti assisting with relief efforts and helping family and friends struggling through this difficult time.

The children of Immaculate Conception School have contributed to the Catholic Relief Services for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
